There is this top shelf boat manufacturer in Florida that goes by Beavertail Skiffs. My brother Capt. Gregg McKee has a great relationship with the owners and must have dropped my name as someone who could design a tee shirt for their inaugural owner's fishing tournament. As usual, research was followed by sketching and more research. In the end, i had little to go on since it was their first event. Sometimes, that's mighty good.
I chose to mock up a vintage trophy look and etch the designs into the solid color. I knew they would be using a light blue tee and went with a bold blast of darkness against the light ribbon with dark lettering. I was unsure if they were going to apply corporate logos around the sides and bottom so I attempted to keep it more vertical. I may have moved the date and location to the east and west if I would have known sooner.
I lifted this picture of someone wearing the tee during the tourney from Beavertail's facebook page. My brother may have taken it, not sure. Anyone looking for a great flats fishing boat....check 'em out! My brother owns one and it is awesome!
Thanks Beavertail.....for the opportunity and the TEE!....love it.
It has been some time since my last little bit of design for my stuff over at society6. I am constantly thinking about some future designs, either images or strange sayings. In my youth, running and jumping meant the world to me. Being fast and being able to jump over things others couldn't became part of my self-identity. I remember being very bothered by the story of The Tortoise and the Hair. That rabbit could have destroyed that turtle if he just would have pushed on....ATTACKED the moment!!! In my book, this was a race! SIMPLE! A chance to show your stuff! Nope, he took it easy and was forever remembered as a slowpoke. I have never ran a sprint or distance race with that mentality. Slow and steady wins the race?!? Slow and Steady gets you crushed!!!! I heard that saying a bunch in my youth...it never made sense and it still doesn't. I know what people are getting at when they say it, but, come on!, how about GO HARD till the FINISH LINE! Anywho, this design had these things in mind as I drew it all out.
The background is the back of a book on ants from the late sixties. I noticed it while browsing about my wife's art classroom. As soon as I saw it, I knew I'd use it for something.
My brother has taken me fishing about 50-75 times in the last two decades. If I were to multiply that by his half and full day charter rates I'd have to sell the house to repay him. Instead, I try and level out this huge trade deficit by drawing anything he wants. He didn't really ask for this one but thought I'd cobble something together for an updated look for his apparel. (The fish shown above is a tarpon.)
This was the latest t-shirt design for Coffeemania (Cortland, NY). Those fine folks up there give me zero boundaries when I am designing except that they are a coffee shop. The sketch at the top was completed during some downtime at a teachers meeting. Some of my co-workers, Ash included, were shooting the breeze when I drew a coffee cup at a 90 degree angle. It looked kinda like a earpiece for headphones and that was it. All my other sketches did not quite work out. The first catch-phrase was a play on "Life is good" and it was just too close and too lame. "Coffee Rocks" is right to the point. I'm gonna heat a cup up right now to celebrate my children getting along.
